S. A. Food Bank Phase III
Design for The San Antonio Food Bank (Food Bank), a non-profit organization, began in 2003. At that time, The Food Bank anticipated and planned for future expansion. Initially, it was believed that a second phase expansion for office space would become necessary in about five years from completion of the first phase and that a third phase for warehouse expansion would become necessary in ten to fifteen years from completion of the first phase. Accordingly, space was allocated on the second floor for future office space but was finished out as storage space so that it could be used by the Client until needed for offices. Also, the building was situated on the site to allow adequate room to enlarge the warehouse at some time in the future. Construction of The Food Bank, began in February of 2006 and it was completed in May of 2007. In late 2008, design for the phase two office space expansion began. Construction for phase two began in January of 2010 and was completed in July of 2010. In 2011, The Food Bank determined that the need for additional parking and warehouse space was eminent. With the down turn in the economy, Food Bank services and community need expanded dramatically and additional storage space became a necessity. Additionally, the Food Bank acquired additional land adjacent to the site, and decided to create an edible garden and pavilion to better interface with the community. Design for phases three and four are currently underway. Based on the unexpected need to expand the warehouse so quickly, a phase five warehouse expansion is currently being evaluated and planned for.
