San Antonio Food Bank
San Antonio, Bexar County Texas
San Antonio Food Bank (SAFB) is a non-profit organization that serves Bexar and surrounding Texas counties. This project resulted when SAFB outgrew its previous location and was in need of a larger warehouse and office facility in order to continue its mission. The outcome was a multi-story, concrete tilt-wall building on a 750,000 sq ft tract of land in northwest San Antonio. The project was designed with the specific intention of completing it in two phases.
The first phase involved construction of a two story, 104,000 sq ft building. The first floor and a mezzanine were finished out to allow for the operation of a 68,000 square foot warehouse and 23,000 square feet of office areas, gathering spaces, a commercial kitchen and educational facilities. The second phase encompassed the finish out of the second level for expanding administrative uses.
In addition to designing the building with current and anticipated needs in mind, design challenges involved the ability to create and maintain a monumental presence within the community with a very limited budget. In order to accomplish this, close attention was paid to construction techniques and materials selections. By carefully manipulating each of these, a functional, attractive structure came together to serve the people of San Antonio, Texas and its neighbors.
